Summer Reading & Writing

When my children were young, I bought them workbooks from Leaning Fair and they had to do a couple of pages every morning of the summer before we began our day of fun. I also made sure to read to them each day and I had them write my grocery lists, write their grandparents and their friends letters.

I have kept in touch with many of my past students and I always write them back! In fact, I still receive letters from my students who are now in college! Please, encourage your child to write me!

I also had my kids pick a favorite book each week and write a letter to a friend (who lived close by) telling him/her why they liked it! It was a great way to keep my kids motivated in reading and writing.

Please consider signing up on Room 1’s front door for items for our Kinder Celebration in June. If each family brought one item, no one would be too burdened. Many hands make lighter work!

School Behavior

Are you asking your child about how their behavior has been each day? Is your child “clipping up?” If you don’t know what this means, ask your child or stop by the classroom. I would love to explain my classroom management system! Please know that I am always eager to communicate with you if you ever have any questions or concerns. I may appear that I am in a constant flurry but I honestly relish any time I have parent contact. The stronger the bridge between home and school, ultimately, the more successful your child will be!

Library Books

All library books are due back May 28th. If you cannot find your child’s library book, you will be responsible for paying the fine for the book. In the past, Northwood has held back giving report cards to a family who has an outstanding library book. Please don’t be one of these families!

Home-Reading Stopped May 24th

A few things to please note-I will be stopping Home-Reading Monday, May 24th. I need to collect all of my books to insure my next year children will enjoy them as your child has. This is not to say that reading should stop! Reading is a life skill and it should be done on a daily basis. Don’t forget to make many trips to the library this summer. The children who keep up reading and being read to over the summer will be the most prepared for the demands of 1st grade.

Thank you very much for coming to the Mother’s Day Celebration! I know how difficult it is to get away from work in the middle of the day. Thank you very much for sharing your day with your child in Room 1! I am truly touched by the beautiful, delightful and meaningful quilt from the families in Room 1. It will be a treasured keepsake of mine for years to come. I am honored to be given such a loving gift.

Clip Up? What?

You've probably heard your child talking about how they clipped up or down. My husband said, "What the heck is he talking about?" Mrs. Moffett has introduced a behavior chart for the children. The chart has levels, such as "Outstanding, Great job, Good day, Ready to learn, Think about it, Teacher's choice, Parent contact", and each child has a clothes pin with his/her name on it. Each day, every child's clothes pin starts at the "ready to learn" level. From there, they may clip up or down depending on their behavior that day.

Each day, ask your child, "Did you clip up today?"
