Donate Your Halloween Candy

Posted by S Lloyd on Saturday, October 31, 2009, In : From Northwood
Tonight when your child goes trick or treating, he/she will get a huge pile of candy. What are you going to do with all that candy?! Donate it to our school! Candy donations will be sent overseas to our troops. You can drop off your donation at the school office during school hours.

Another option is to donate your Halloween candy to Silverado Dental Care. They, too, will send the candy to our troops in Iraq and Aghanistan, and they will give you $1 for every pound of candy! Donations will be...

Idea: Thanksgiving Family Tablecloth

Posted by S Lloyd on Saturday, October 31, 2009, In : Ideas
Start a wonderful family tradition this Thanksgiving that will be enjoyed and treasured for many years to come. Purchase a table cloth that fits your dining table (the bigger, the better), one or more bottles of festive acrylic paint, disposable pie pan, and a permanent black Sharpie pen.

When everyone is relaxing and digesting your delicious dinner, break out your supplies! Fill the pie pan with enough paint to cover the bottom of the pan. Have each guest place one hand, palm side down, into...

What is Halloween? We Asked the Kids!

Posted by S Lloyd on Friday, October 30, 2009, In : From the Children
I love hearing children's take on things. You can always get a good laugh. That's why I asked the children, "What is Halloween?"

Here are some of their responses (written exactly how they answered):

Anthony
It's when you go trick or treating and get candy with their costumes.

Victoria
It's when you get to wear your costumes and go trick or treating. You get a lot of candy. You would get scared if you saw something. You would see bats.

David
We get candy. We go up to people's houses. That's it.

Ryan
I...

Halloween Celebration Friday

Posted by S Lloyd on Friday, October 30, 2009, In : General
Tomorrow morning will likely be chaotic because the children will be really excited and wanting to show off their costumes. To reduce the chaos, please help your child with putting any accessories to their costume in their cubby. Accessories may include a mask, handheld items, and anything that dangles. Encourage your child to quickly sign in, answer the question-of-the-day, and get his/her homework folder out.

Your help will make a BIG difference! Don't forget to bring your cameras and stay f...

Children & Honesty

Posted by S Lloyd on Thursday, October 22, 2009, In : From the Parents
Sebastian really cracked me up on Monday! I called him to the back table to do some testing with me. When he sat down I said, "Your hair looks really nice." He looked at me and said, "Your hair is crazy!" I laughed and replied, "Is that good or bad?" He responded, "That's veeeeery, veeeeery bad!"

Eliza came back for testing next. Right off the bat I asked her, "How does my hair look?" She took a good look at my hair and then lowered her eyes. It was written all over her face! I said, "It's oka...

Idea: Go Fish!

Posted by S Lloyd on Wednesday, October 21, 2009, In : Ideas
Here's a great idea from Mrs. Smith in Room 3:

Play the classic game "Go Fish" with your child. First, use playing cards to teach the game. Then, once your child is familiar with the game, make "Go Fish" cards with our sight words (see, I, my, like, to, he, is,etc.). You will need two cards for each word. If your child needs practice with letter names or sounds you could also make cards with letters on them!

Thanks for the idea, Mrs. Smith!

Children's Book Swap

Posted by S Lloyd on Saturday, October 10, 2009, In : Dates & Events
On November 2nd, we will be having a children's book swap. Children will get to trade in their gently used books they've outgrown or no longer enjoy, and get to choose other gently used books! No money is exchanged - it's FREE!

How does it work?
1. Go through your child's books. (Children's books only, please!) Select ones that your child would like to donate.
2. Use a marker to write "Donation" on the inside cover. (This way they won't get mixed up with Room 1 or library books.)
3. Bring the b...

Idea: Super Suppers!

Posted by S Lloyd on Sunday, October 4, 2009, In : Ideas
Dinner time is a great time to get together and talk about your day. If your child is like mine, you probably don't get many details or find it difficult to start a conversation to really get your child to talk. I came up with Super Suppers - table discussions/games that will get the conversation going!

1. Take turns giving compliments to each person at the table.

    Example compliments:
        "Your hair is pretty!"
        "You give the best hugs!"
        "I enjoy reading with you!"
