During the last Art class, the children learned all about the color wheel. They learned which colors are primary and which are secondary. The children painted the color wheel using only primary colors. Then, they mixed the primary colors to make secondary colors. The children were really amazed that they could make another color on their own! Under Handouts, you will find a color wheel that you can print and have your child paint. Talk about colors and rainbows. Point to objects in your home ... Continue reading ...
This week in Science, we talked about the structures of leaves, why they're green, why they change color, and why they fall during Autumn. We went on a leaf hunt, and then compared and sorted leaves. We talked about the different shapes, textures, and edges. There's so much more to leaves, if you just take a look! To end our unit on leaves, the children made Leaf People. They really had a good time with that. The children began with two leaves, glued them on paper, and then drew a person and ... During UA "may do" time, Mrs. Blair showed the children how to play a math matching game. Then, she played a game with Reese to show the children how it works. It's a simple matching game that can have any number of pictures, numbers, shapes, etc. The math matching game we played had math problems (e.g. 2+2=4) and shapes (two squares and two circles) representing the problems . Each square on the "board" is covered with chips/squares. Choose one, and then try to find the other that goes with ... Continue reading ...
We've been working on more or fewer during our Math time. When given two groups of counters, the children can identify which has more and which has fewer. Yay! However, there's more to it than that. Where they get stumped is when they are shown a group of items and then asked to make a group that's x# more or fewer. For example, I made a group of three blocks and then asked the children to make a group that has two more. I got many, many different answers. This seems to be a toughy for them. ... Parents, did you get your homework? If you didn't, ask your child what your assignment was for tonight. The firemen of our Napa station visited today to teach the children about fire safety. They learned about "stop, drop and roll", when to call 9-1-1 (and when NOT to - pizza delivery), and what to do if your house is on fire. The coolest part was learning about the gear. Did you know they have alarms on their gear that go off when they are still for 30 seconds? The purpose of that is to aler... Continue reading ...

Stephanie has been teaching the Math lessons for Room 1 Mondays through Thursdays. Our current Math lesson focuses on sorting. The children had their choice of items to sort - colored shapes, nuts & bolts, bottle caps, shells and keys. Each child sorted their items three ways (such as shape, size, color, texture). Today, Victoria sorted bottle caps by color while Diego A. sorted colored shapes by size. Great job, guys! Continue reading ...
