Guidance for Parent Volunteers
These are some of the items we thought might help you feel more comfortable in the classroom. We ask that you please call us if you can't come when you are expected or if you need to leave early. By notifying us, we can get someone to cover for you.
Parent volunteers can assist with the following:
Arrival 8:00 - 8:10
Assist children with signing in, answering the question of the day, and getting their homework folder out of their backpack.
Rug Time 8:10 - 8:45
After class is settled on the rug, here is what needs to be done:
- Check off homework as it is shared with the class.
- Read directions to prepare for science or P.E. Center and help to get it set up.
- Work one-on-one with children who need extra practice. The teacher will give you a list and paper to be checked off. Work no longer than 5 minutes with each child and send them back to the rug. All children need to be back on the rug for the story and language lesson.
- Place the writing page and a pencil at each chair. Make sure you have 21 passed out. The teacher will also need one to teacher the children.
- Roll the overhead projector to the center of the tables and turn it on.
- Stuff mailboxes with take-home papers.
- Help cut out or staple etc.
- File papers, if needed.
Center Time 8:45 - 10:00
You will be assigned to work at Science, P.E., 0r Writing center with a small group (4-5 children).
You should direct the activity to be complete in about 15 minutes. Remember you are in charge, so children need to work quietly, orderly and be encouraged to be attentive. Anyone who does not behave needs to be put in time-out by going to another table and putting their head down. If you are at P.E., they should be sent back to the classroom for a time-out.
We switch about every 15-20 minutes to new centers.
*If you choose to stay the whole day, you can assist with taking the children to the bathroom and getting outdoors for snack time. You can stay out for recess or stay inside and help put future projects together.
Recess/Snack 10:00 - 10:20
- Hand out baby wipes to each child before they go to the playground.
- Make sure they have their hats on.
- Remove the name cards from the question-of-the-day board.
- Change the question-of-the-day.
- Tear off the sign-in sheet and on the next page write, "Please Sign In", the date and "by".
Choice Time 11:00 - 11:30
You may direct a game, help with an Art project and/or go to different centers.
